Tech tip

If you are looking for a new battery, you should check out the Odyssey. Hawker energy manufacturers the battery. When I first checked it out it seemed to me that the battery was weaker then the optima. After getting some clarification on how they rate the battery, I was sold. Odyssey combines in one box the characteristics of two batteries. It can deep cycle as well as provide serious cranking power. These batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses of 1700a for 5 sec as well as 400 charge/discharge cycles to 100% depth of discharge (DOD). A typical battery can do one or the other, but not both.

Odyssey has a guaranteed service life. It has a 8 year design life and 3 to 8 year service life. It is the only battery capable of delivering a large number of deep cycles - up to 400 when fully discharged or up to 500 when discharged to 80%. How many times can you run your standard battery down before you need to replace it? I bet not 400 to 500 times.

The cranking power of a Odyssey battery is double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even at low temperatures. Also with simple constant voltage charging, there is no limitation on the inrush current. This means you can charge your battery with as many amps as your charger can put out as long as it doesn't exceed 14 vdc. Try that with a standard battery.

Here is a comparison, on size between an Optima and 3 of Odyssey's larger batteries.

Optima 800:
1000 amps, 10" L, 6.9" W, 7.8" H, 39 lbs

Odyssey 925:
925 amps, 6.69" L, 7.05" W, 5.04" H, 24 lbs

Odyssey 1200:
1200 amps, 7.87" L, 6.66" W, 7.55" H, 34.4 lbs

Odyssey 1700:
1700 amps, 13.02" L, 6.62" W, 7.68" H, 58.7 lbs

Here is a few pictures of the batteries compared to a Nautilus deep cycle marine battery.
